Offering sustainable skin care: Honam Naturals
Honam Naturals, owned by Naana Daniels, is a handmade and vegan organic skincare line made for the whole family, and especially for people with sensitive skin.
What inspired you to start Honam Naturals?
Honam Naturals was born out of necessity. I was looking for a solution to help with my severe skin burn and lupus-related symptoms. Most of the organic products on the market were expensive and occasionally made my condition worse, so I researched online for products that would heal my skin without leaving scars and instead made my own product. It cleared my skin within a week and friends started asking for some too - and that’s how Honam Naturals came to be!
Your business puts an emphasis on eco-friendly products and packaging. Can you tell us why these are important aspects of your brand values?
Honam Naturals is a skincare line for all skin types that practices sustainable, non-toxic living. I have lived with Lupus and Scleroderma, both autoimmune diseases that affect one’s skin. Though there is no known cause, there is a belief that the sun’s UV rays, as well as the environment, are contributing factors to the disease. Therefore, it was imperative to me that eco-friendly practices played a major part in the product packaging. Using aluminum packaging also helps protect the integrity of the product contents.
Can you share a little bit about your background and career prior to starting Honam Naturals?
When I was 18, I actually enrolled in cosmetology school in Ghana and did some modelling for a company that hosted the Miss Ghana contest at around the same time. Before taking on Honam Naturals full-time I was an Executive Assistant in a property management office.
What are some of your more popular products?
Our top sellers are the Mango and Coconut Butters. Body butters in general are much thicker in consistency than creams and lotions, have less water and contain fatty acids which your skin needs to regenerate cells. The Coconut Butter also has a natural SPF of 6 and is loaded with Vitamin A, E, and K. The Rosewater Room Fragrance has been popular lately too!
Can you share your number one skin care tip with us?
Drink lots of water! I also advise clients to exfoliate with citrus-based scrubs because the lemons tighten your pores and even out your skin tone. It’s important to moisturize with products that have sunscreen, and use sunscreen all year round.
At Shop Durham Region we believe our business community is stronger together. What are a few of your favourite Durham-based businesses?
The FeelGood Natural Health Store in Whitby is great. I’d also love to give a shout out to House of Quayson Construction and Padie’s Cakes.
How have opportunities such as Digital Main Street’s ShopHERE program and Shop Durham Region helped to support your business?
I have always wanted to transition online and the ShopHERE opportunity came at just the right time. It helped me build a user-friendly website that I could integrate with Instagram, and the website analytics allowed me to advertise more effectively.
I was able to connect my existing website to the Shop Durham Region Online Marketplace, which gave me access to new customers in Durham by helping me reach a broader geographical area. I love that I’ve been able to build my community as well!
Anything else you’d like to share?
I have lived in Durham Region for the past 20 years and have watched the amazing growth of new families and businesses sprouting on every corner. Even with all these changes, there is still a strong sense of community and it seems we are all connected to each other through genuine friendships.
