Helping seniors thrive: Art Your Service

Art Your Service offers live, personal and interactive sessions for seniors to help them thrive. Owned by Jen Tindall, this unique virtual service provider is headquartered in the Town of Whitby.

Why did you decide to start Art Your Service?

I originally started Art Your Service to create meaningful programs for seniors, mostly in-person and with a tangible product. When the pandemic hit, I changed the business model to Virtual Classes & Socials for Seniors in August with an audience of 15 people. We now have 400+ active subscribers. I host each session and have amazing facilitators from the senior fitness and creative aging field guide the classes.

Can you share a little bit about your background and career?

Before starting my own business I worked as an arts programmer and events coordinator for over a decade at Harbourfront Centre in Toronto. Both these experiences come to play with Art Your Service everyday as I look to deliver the best programs to entertain and engage our seniors.

Tell us about the specific programs you offer. Are they provided exclusively through senior centres and organizations or can anyone sign up?

We offer two classes a day, five days a week. In the morning we host a fitness or movement class and in the afternoon it’s a creative or social session. Morning classes include Pilates, chair yoga and creative dance and movement classes. In the afternoon you’ll find socials, cooking classes, music and art classes. All classes are included under one subscription. Think about it as a virtual senior’s centre – something for everyone! And there’s no need to pre-register for anything, just come and go as you please.

Although a bulk of my seniors come from Senior Centres, many are single subscribers who are finding a new community with us. We have seniors zooming in from New Jersey, to Calgary to the Canoe Capital of Canada – Atikokan – 200 miles north of Thunder Bay!

What about the subscription service? How does that work?

It’s like any subscription – a single senior pays $19.99/month. This can be cancelled at any time. Some prefer to pay in three month installments. It’s flexible! We also have facility memberships available for senior centres, retirement homes and communities. We also have several free subscriptions set aside for those on a limited budget as we believe everyone should have access to meaningful programs.

What are some of the benefits you’ve seen from the programming so far?

So many of our seniors have told me that the programs give them something to look forward to and have really brightened their days during the pandemic. Fitness classes everyday keeps us all moving and limber. The creative and social classes help us to engage and be social so we all feel less alone. I say we as not only do I host each session I participate in all the classes as well! So many of the seniors came for the daily fitness classes and are now trying the painting classes which they had never done before – and they are loving it!

When did you start Art Your Service? Is there a piece of advice you can pass on to fellow entrepreneurs?

I started Art Your Service in 2017 but it really didn’t take off until Virtual Classes & Socials for Seniors. My advice? Be flexible with your business model and try different things until it works. Also be good to yourself, it sure isn’t easy.

At Shop Durham Region we believe our business community is stronger together. What’s one of your favourite Durham-based businesses?
